Vesnina married husband Pavel Tabunstov in 2016, and soon embarked on a career renaissance that featured a first Grand Slam singles semifinal at that year’s Wimbledon Championship and culminated with a BNP Paribas Open title the following season.

She first left the tour for maternity leave in 2018, shortly after topping the WTA doubles rankings for the first time with longtime partner Ekaterina Makarova, and gave birth to daughter Elizaveta in November.

At 34, she revealed plans to return to the tour in 2021, eager to take young Liza on tour and show her the world.

I’m trying to give Liza as much as I can. I want to teach her the piano and dancing, because for girls especially, it’s good to have rhythm. Maybe next, I’ll teach her to play tennis, and see how she likes it. If she does, I’ll be happy to help her play more. Elena Vesnina in 2020

“I want to teach her to be a brave and loving person,” she told me in 2020. “I want to teach her how to be free, to not be afraid of making a first step in anything, even when it’s difficult.”

Vesnina enjoyed impressive results in both singles and doubles, reaching the third round of Roland Garros and finishing runner-up in mixed doubles. A month later, she and Veronika Kudermetova twice came within a point of winning the Wimbledon women’s doubles event, ultimately falling to Hsieh Su-Wei and Elise Mertens in a heartbreaking 9-7 final set.

An Olympic gold medalist with Makarova at the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro, she played both women’s and mixed doubles in Tokyo, winning the silver medal with Aslan Karatsev.
