Tennis fans around the world are still buzzing about Gael Monfils' epic first-round comeback at Roland Garros—including his No. 1 fan, wife Elina Svitolina. But was she inspired, too?

With Monfils watching on less than 12 hours after he finished off his victory after midnight, Svitolina authored her own comeback against Storm Hunter in Wednesday's opening match on Court Simonne-Mathieu to reach the third round. After losing the first set, the former world No. 3 and last week's Strasbourg champion rallied for a 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 win over the Aussie qualifier for her ninth win in a row.

Afterwards, she told the fans in her on-court interview that she was Monfils' biggest cheerleader from afar.

"I was screaming in my room, so if someone heard me, it's me cheering for Gael!" Svitolina said. "It was an unbelievable match. I don't know, actually, what he's doing here now. I think he should be resting! But I'm really thankful for him to come to support me, especially in this tough match.

"I'm looking forward to his next round. Right now, it's his turn to go to the second round, and I wish him all the best."

Svitolina was up late Tuesday night watching Monfils' comeback win.

Svitolina was up late Tuesday night watching Monfils' comeback win.

Later, Svitolina joked with reporters that staying up to watch her husband's dramatic comeback—his first Grand Slam win in nearly 500 days—didn't cause her slow start.

"I watched the whole match. I was up until midnight when the match was done and went to bed straight away. Actually, was sleeping good. Had a solid seven hours of sleep, which is quite good for the Grand Slam," she said with a laugh.

"It gave me actually motivation to go again today. He was there for me today. Made such a big effort to come and support me, especially in a tough day like today. So really it motivated me to fight and not give up and play every point, try to put 100% effort out there."

Tennis' power couple, with baby daughter Skai in tow, was already the feel-good story of the first week in Paris, and their legend has only grown over the first four days.

"[It's the] first tournament for us where we are both playing at the same tournament, and Skai is here with us in Paris as well," Svitolina added. "It's really, really special. So far everything is going well, and we really enjoy our time off the court together, and on the court as well we try to be focused and play as good as we can.

"Of course, it's really important to have a team for Skai, who takes care of her, so then we can focus on tennis. And especially at such a big event with lots of pressure and lots of things going on, it's important that your mind is calm about your child and then you have 100% head into the tennis."

Monfils will be back on Court Philippe-Chatrier on Thursday night as he faces No. 6 seed Holger Rune. Svitolina, meanwhile, will face either No. 5 seed Carolina Garcia or Anna Blinkova, whom she beat in last week's Strasbourg final.

Moments like there are what the pair were training for in the last year ahead of their respective comebacks, Svitolina said.

"All this time where we were training together starting from January, him coming back from the injury, me from pregnancy, he was working really, really hard," she said. "I know how many hours he puts into this, and he wants desperately to come back to the level where he's been and working towards this goal slowly.

"Of course, he is not 25 years old, and we could see that yesterday. The guy is 22; he is 36, but still, you know, with a lot of experience. I feel like [Monfils] still has a lot of good matches, maybe similar matches to yesterday, in his bag. He is going to be back playing better I'm sure very soon just with a little bit more matches on this level.

"It's going to be exciting match against Rune. Hopefully not too late so I can come and watch and support him as well, but now he is recovering and hopefully will be ready."
