Emma Raducanu’s British Invasion is complete: the young hopeful from Bromley can now add BBC Sports Personality of the Year to her growing trophy collection.

The 19-year-old first enraptured the British public when she stormed into the fourth round of Wimbledon, and became a household name when she won her maiden major title at the US Open, in an all-teen final against Leylah Fernandez.

"It's such an honor just to be amongst these nominees. To win is pretty amazing," said Raducanu, who rose up nearly 350 spots in the WTA rankings to end the 2021 season inside the Top 20.

"The energy this year playing at Wimbledon in front of my home crowd—that was something I've never felt before.”

In the annual poll, Raducanu earned more votes than Olympic icon Tom Daley, who won a gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Games, and swimmer Adam Peaty—among numerous other British sporting celebrities.

"I've watched Sports Personality of the Year growing up and it's an honor to be amongst those past winners.

"I'm happy for British tennis as well and that we've managed to get this award...again."

Raducanu recently hired coach Torben Beltz and plans to begin the 2022 season in Australia. A pre-season exhibition in Abu Dhabi was scrapped when the Brit contracted COVID-19.
