Federer adds Montreal to his schedule

The Swiss has played the Rogers Cup only once since 2011.

On National Swiss Day, Roger Federer announced he will be coming to Canada to play for the Rogers Cup.

“I’m happy to be coming back to Montreal, as I have not had the chance to play there for many years,” said Federer. “This 2017 season has been very exciting and I am really looking forward to being back on the court on the ATP Tour."

It’s at least a mildly surprising move given that Federer has played in Canada only once (2014 in Toronto) since 2011. The last time Federer played in Montreal fans were holding up signs to wish him well for his 30th birthday.

The Swiss has a 31-9 record at the Cup that bears his name, winning the title in 2004 and 2006. He has rested from the event in recent years to prioritize his preferred faster surface at Cincinnati’s Western & Southern Open, which follows the week after. But after the clay-court swing in Stuttgart, Federer insisted that there would be "no more breaks."

Following the Rogers Cup and Cincinnati, Federer hopes to be healthy to compete for the US Open title. It would be a chance to win a third major in a year for the fourth time in his career (2004, '06, '07). He last won the US Open back in 2008.

Federer will also be chasing the No. 1 ranking. He trails Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal, but a strong couple of tournaments could net him the top ranking as soon as August 21.
