Roger Federer kicked off his two-Slam 2017 at the Hopman Cup in Perth, and he'll be starting his 2018 the same way.

But first, he went to see the region's outdoor attractions, including this smiling quokka:

Quokkas, the Rottnest Island website says, are small wallabies that mainly stay awake at night.

"I thought it was like a bigger mouse, but it's more like a smaller kangaroo," Federer said. "But very cute."

The 19-time Grand Slam champion also hung out at the beach.

At the Hopman Cup—an ITF event consisting of men's singles, women's singles and mixed doubles—Federer will pair up for the second time with Belinda Bencic to form Team Switzerland.

This year, Bencic will be the one making a comeback. Since returning to the tour in September from wrist surgery, the former Top 10 20-year-old has raised her ranking from No. 318 to No. 74 with four titles.

The Swiss team is scheduled to play its first round-robin tie on Saturday at 4:30 a.m. Eastern time.
