Federer looks back at Wimbledon 2001 win over Sampras

July always brings plenty of Wimbledon feels. Although this year is very different, milestones and historic moments are being celebrated extra hard. Nineteen years ago, Roger Federer scored his first win on Centre Court over none other than Pete Sampras.

Sampras was the defending champion, and had seven Wimbledon titles under his belt. He was a legend at the All England Club, to say the very least, winning 53 of 54 matches between 1993-2000.

Their one and only meeting was at the All England Club in the round of 16, and the young Swiss—just 19 years of age—would prevail, 7-6 (7), 5-7, 6-4, 6-7 (2), 7-5. Federer has since stormed past some of Sampras' records, winning eight Wimbledon trophies as well as 20 Grand Slams to the American's 14.
