Federer's 2017 start triggers 2006 comparisons

Yes, on Sunday, Stan Wawrinka called his vanquisher Roger Federer an "a**hole" during his emotional speech, but the two were actually just being chummy.

"I was trying, when he looked at me, not to give him the sad face," Federer said. "I was looking at him going, 'You'll be fine,' and gave him a laugh, say, maybe gets his mind off it. I guess I achieved that."

Federer elevated his game past his compatriot, 6-4, 7-5 to win his fifth Indian Wells title. The win also marks Federer's 25th ATP Masters 1000 title and 90th career title.

The 35-year-old is now 13-1 on the season after finishing 2016 with a six-month injury layoff. Which begs the question—has he entered a time machine?

His two titles are bringing up comparisons to 2006, a year that saw him win 12 titles (including three majors) and compile a 92-5 record.
