French Open finalist Vondrousova out for rest of 2019

For the first half of 2019, Marketa Vondrousova was a steady force on the WTA tour, reaching the quarterfinals or better at six successive tournaments and contesting three championship matches.

The Czech defeated Simona Halep on two different surfaces, but ultimately left her biggest impression at Roland Garros. In Paris, she advanced to the French Open final without dropping a set, before finishing runner-up to Ashleigh Barty.

What appeared to be Vondrousova’s breakout moment and opportunity to take even greater strides turned out to be her final high point on court this season. Having sustained an injury on her left wrist—her dominant hand—during a Wimbledon practice, the Czech hasn’t played since her first-round exit to Madison Brengle at the All England Club.

On Tuesday, the 20-year-old shared an update on Instagram, revealing surgery would keep her on the sidelines for the rest of the year. She noted, “all went really good, so I need to rest now. So Season 2019 is over for me but can’t wait to be back.”

Vondrousova, who was ranked No. 81 when she reached the Budapest final in February, peaked at No. 14 in the rankings on July 1. She currently sits at No. 22.
