WATCH: Rune and Wawrinka have words after Stan's three-set win at Indian Wells

Stan Wawrinka called Holger Rune a “baby on the court” after their first encounter, last November at the Paris Masters.

After their second match, Monday at Indian Wells, the Swiss veteran didn’t call the young Dane anything, but Rune didn’t like that very much either.

There was clearly some bad blood heading into today’s third-round collision at the BNP Paribas Open, which you could detect from the crowded Stadium 2 and the intensity of the competitors. And the drama carried over into the quality of play, in a match that saw Rune save a match point in the second set, then recover from a 0-4 tiebreak deficit to force a decider.

The third set remained too close to call until Wawrinka staged a rally of his own to break Rune at 5-5, before serving out the match to prevail, 6-2, 6-7 (5), 7-5.

But the drama was only getting started.

'Break Point' producers, and Tennis Channel viewers, got all they could ask for during the conclusion of Wawrinka vs. Rune.

“You’ve got nothing to say now?” a smiling Rune asked Wawrinka after a handshake at net.

“Huh?” Wawrinka replied.

“You’ve got nothing to say now?” Rune repeated.

“What do you want me to say?” said Wawrinka, after Rune shook the chair umpire’s hand and walked away.

Rune said something indecipherable to Wawrinka after that, but the overall message was clear: the 19-year-old hasn’t forgotten what the 37-year-old said.

We now look forward to two things:

  1. Their next match, and post-match handshake.
  2. The Break Point episode—Netflix was filming Rune today—which might reveal even more.
