Is Radwanska capable of a deep US Open run?

While the WTA superstars gear up for a competitive draw at the US Open, world No. 10 Agnieszka Radwanska is getting a tune-up. She played controlled tennis against Eugenie Bouchard to open her title defense at New Haven.

The Polish star is one of tennis’ greatest magicians with a racket, and there were more than a few breathtaking shots in her Tuesday win.

A title defense in New Haven would be good sign for the former world No. 2, who has not contended for any big titles in 2017. She’s also had a life change added to her career when she married Dawid Celt in July. Can she get in top form to make a surprising run at the US Open title?

The 28-year-old Radwanska is yesterday’s version of Simona Halep. She has won scattered big matches against more powerful players, but hasn't been able to string several of them together in the late stages of a major.

Radwanska has been a semifinalist four times in majors and was also a finalist at 2012 Wimbledon. Five times she’s been to the fourth round at the US Open, so anything beyond will be a first. But with power players like Serena Williams, Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova not currently dominating the tour, she might be able to weave some of her signature magic.

It all depends on how well Radwanska is playing, but don’t overlook her intelligence and experience. At the least, tennis fans in New York will get to watch one of the most tactical players on tour.
