Sock Young PPA San Clemente

The last time Jack Sock and Donald Young faced off on the court was in 2017 at ATP Delray Beach Open, where Sock commanded his countryman in a straight-set semifinal victory.

Eight years later, the two meet again on a different court in San Clemente, California, both men having transiitoned from tennis to pickleball.

Competing at PPA Select Medical Orange County Cup, both players won their opening matches—in entirely different fashions.

Young conquered his usual doubles partner (and former tennis pro) Travis Rettenmaier in 18 minutes. Sock, on the other hand, lost his first game in that many minutes to No. 55 seed Martin Emmrich.

The former tennis pro rallied to win the second game 11-7, but the deciding set was getting away from him.

After saving one match point at 7-10 and gaining serve, Emmrich rolls his ankle while diving for a drop shot in the kitchen, immediately calling for a medical timeout. Sock rushed across the net to help his opponent limp to the bench to be treated.

Returning to serve following the medical timeout, with the score now at 8-10 on Sock’s serve, the two continued battling on. Emmrich earned one more match point on his paddle before Sock regained serve and closed out the match 12-10.

Meeting Young in the second round of the men’s singles bracket isn’t the only concern in Sock’s draw. In mixed doubles, he could face a second round run-in with former Davis Cup teammate and Nothing Major Podcast co-host Sam Querrey.

Young would meet either of them in the quarterfinals, while Genie Bouchard waves at them from across the half. The foursome competes across all five brackets in San Clemente.
