Sinner Navarro USO Split

Excitement has been building since the USTA revealed the initial 16 teams that signed up for the revamped US Open mixed doubles event earlier this month.

The entry list produced a few surprising duos to say the least, including the one that landed on top of the combined entry rankings. That team? Three-time major winner Jannik Sinner and 2024 US Open semifinalist Emma Navarro.

“It was very unexpected, to be honest,” laughed Sinner when asked about the partnership during his Wimbledon media day press conference over the weekend.

In fact, as the Italian would soon reveal, Sinner and Navarro hadn’t crossed paths until Friday at the grass-court major.

“Look, I just met her yesterday for the first time. We never talked. We never texted to each other. It's actually a funny story,” recalled the ATP’s world No. 1 Saturday.

“The tournament, they wanted us to kind of play together because certain teams were already set up. The choice was not big, but I'm very happy to play with Emma.”

On their initial communication, Sinner shared that, “I told her already to (not) get pissed with me with my very good volleys. Doubles, I struggle.”

With that in mind, Navarro may be the one to take the lead here. The New York native won the Eisenhower Cup—a Tie Break Tens event held at Indian Wells—in 2024 with Ben Shelton. That format, involving 10-point tiebreakers, regularly brings the top men and women together in an effort to raise funds for local charities.

US Open mixed doubles entries will close on July 28, with the top eight teams by combined ranking earning direct acceptance. Eight additional pairings will be awarded wild cards to battle it out August 19-20 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

The champions will split $1 million in prize money.
