SPEECH: Rome champion Jasmine Paolini takes it all in

Jasmine Paolini's brief foray with one of Rafael Nadal's former coaches has come to an end. The Italian announced last week that she and coach Marc Lopez, whom she hired in April. have gone their separate ways.

The Italian hired the Spaniard, a former world No. 3 in doubles, after her decade-long relationship with longtime coach Renzo Furlan ended following her semifinal run at the Miami Open in March. With Furlan, she reached several career highs, and he was named the 2024 WTA Coach of the Year after a season in which Paolini reached two Grand Slam singles finals at Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

Shortly after hiring Lopez, Paolini won the Internazionali BNL d'Italia on home soil, topping Coco Gauff in the final, while followed a semifinal effort in Stuttgart in their first tournament together.

But at the two majors she was runner-up at last year, Paolini struggled to produce the same highs. She lost in the fourth round of Roland Garros to Elina Svitolina after haivng two match points, and was part of a rash of early-round upsets for Top 10 players at Wimbledon. She lost from a set up to Kamilla Rakhimova in the second round

"We had some great results together. Especially in Rome and Paris [where she was doubles champion with Sara Errani]," Paolini wrote on social media on the second Monday of Wimbledon.

"I appreciate all the hard work and energy Marc gave every day. Now that this part of the season is over, I've decided to make a change.

"I've learned a lot and made good progress. And now I'm taking the time to reflect on what the next step will be. Thank you again, Marc, for everything."

Paolini dropped from No. 5 to No. 9 in the first edition of the WTA rankings following the grass-court Grand Slam.
