Jennifer Brady's first-round win over Anastasija Sevastova carried extra significance for the rising American star, who is taking the court at Roland Garros for the first time since pairing up with new coach Brad Stine and parting with longtime coach Michael Geserer.

Brady hired Geserer in 2019, and it was that partnership—along with a successful pre-season in Germany—that kickstarted her 2020 surge, one that saw her reach a maiden Grand Slam semifinal at the US Open before going one round better at the Australian Open in February.

"I felt like, basically what I would want or ask from him wouldn't be what he would want to do," Brady explained after the 6-3, 6-3 win on Tuesday. "It was nothing bad, I just felt like maybe it ran its course, and I didn't want to start to disrespect him on court or kind of ignore him or not listen to what he had to say. So I felt like it was time to just end it before I got to that point.

"Considering the circumstances, I think things ended pretty well. I mean, if I saw him, it wouldn't be awkward or weird or anything."

Brady amassed a 3-5 record after the Australian Open, suffering a four-match losing streak from that Melbourne defeat to Naomi Osaka through the Mutua Madrid Open, where she scored a win over former world No. 1 Venus Williams.

Though it's still early days with Stine, whom Brady remembers from her days training with the USTA and also coaches ATP player Tommy Paul, the No. 13 seed can be pleased with her win over Sevastova—a noted clay-court player and former world No. 11—is enthusiastic about the shake-up, hoping it will lead to her breaking new ground at Roland Garros, where she is yet to pass the second round in four previous attempts.

"We had one practice together before the tournament just a couple days ago. But yeah, I think for me, Australia seems like a lifetime ago. I've honestly forgotten all about it.

"I'm the type of person, I get bored with things pretty quick, and to have something new is always exciting. I think everybody is like that; when they have something new, they look forward to something, and I think that's how I feel, definitely refreshed and mentally just ready to gear up for RG."

Brady will play French star Fiona Ferro, who reached the fourth round in Paris last fall, on Thursday.
