Time stood still for a bit when JJ Wolf struck what many would already call 2022’s Shot of the Year at the Miami Open Saturday night.

“I honestly completely forget that moment,” Wolf would later admit.

Stretched out wide by No. 3 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, the My Tennis Life star let go of his right hand to pass the Greek at net with an unforgettable lefty passing shot—one that nearly changed the course of the match.

Wolf was able to ride that momentum into a third set at the Hard Rock Stadium, and was more than happy to relive the moment despite a 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-1 defeat.

“It’s my shot in practice,” Wolf explained, co-signing comments from fellow Americans Christopher Eubanks and Sebastian Korda—both of whom have fallen victim to the shot in the past. “When I start my hits, I warm up lefty just to get my wrists going. I actually broke my wrist in a soccer game so I played for a full summer lefty. Both my parents are lefties, as well!”

Wolf burst onto the pro circuit in 2020 when he reached the US Open’s third round, and became something of a pandemic tennis meme when he grew out his hair into an unmissable mullet.

Now 23 and free of injuries that plagued him in 2021, Wolf is rocking a shorter haircut these days and is instead starting to serve notice for flashy shotmaking. Striking the ball with the effortless speed of a young Andre Agassi, he qualified for the BNP Paribas Open and pushed Roberto Bautista Agut to a third-set tiebreaker just last week.

“It’s all about getting used to being on tour because I really do like to be home and it can feel really different on the road,” he said back in February. “I’m ready to get into the life and start enjoying wherever I am at the moment.”

Wolf certainly enjoyed last night's thriller, and will likely aim even higher as he edges closer to a long overdue Top 100 debut.
