You're seeing that caption right: defending Citi Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova is missing the tournament this year due to visa trouble. The world No. 108 said she has never had problems like this before, and withdrew from the WTA International. Washington is the Russian's most recent title, and only one since 2016.

The 34-year-old is hoping the issue is resolved so she can still play some US Open tune-up events. The 16-time WTA champion won the US Open in 2004.

Her visa troubles may end sooner rather than later as Andrea Kalan, a spokeswoman for U.S. Embassy in Moscow, is trying to help.

Kuznetsova is currently riding a four-match losing streak with her last win coming in Madrid over Aryna Sabalenka.
