Kyrgios brings energy and sassy spirit to Team World

Nick Kyrgios is at his most motivated when he's in a team environment so it makes sense that he's really, really amped up for Laver Cup. In Geneva this week, he's been spending time trashing talking Team Europe (in a friendly way) and bro-ing out with his Team World teammates.

The 24-year-old has recorded wins over most of Team Europe including Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Alexander Zverev, Stefanos Tstisipas, Fabio Fognini and Roberto Bautista Agut. The only person who he hasn't beaten is Dominic Thiem; their sole meeting was back in 2015 with Kyrgios retiring at 3-4.

The world No. 27 has posted strong results in Laver Cup action as well. In 2017, he won his singles match over Tomas Berdych, and teamed up with Jack Sock to beat Berdych and Rafael Nadal. The Australian would lose the deciding match in a tiebreaker to Federer. In Chicago in 2018, he lost to Federer again, but remained undefeated with Sock in doubles.

So his hubris isn't ill placed, at all, and Team World really needs a hype man, and a lot of confidence, if they plan to overtake Team Europe for the trophy.

“I mean, yeah, on paper we’re undermanned and we’re an underdog, but I don’t believe that – you know, I strongly believe that we can win," Kyrgios said.

The best part is how much fun Kyrgios looks like he's having with his teammates, which include Americans Taylor Fritz, John Isner and Sock.

And it's obvious how passionate he is about helping lead Team World to victory.

It'll be an action-packed weekend, though Kyrgios not scheduled for Day 1 matches on Friday.
