It’s not every day two legends of the sport share the court, but Billie Jean King and John McEnroe showed us last Sunday that no matter how hard you try, you can’t teach incredible timing. Despite their combined age of 139 years, King and McEnroe still volley better than at least 99% of active tennis players.

Quite frankly, King’s movement for a 77-year-old is phenomenal. Her balance, extremely short backswing, and forward momentum are all hallmarks of a great volleyer, and all recreational players should take note of. Her uncanny timing and ability to hit the sweet spot, however, is something that can’t be taught. The same goes for McEnroe, who owned arguably the best set of hands our sport has ever seen.

“It’s always a good Sunday when you can hit the court with John McEnroe,” King said on social media, calling the 62-year-old lefty “a true legend of the sport.” As the saying goes, it takes one to know one.
