Two-time Grand Slam champion Li Na continues to rack up new business opportunities, four years after hanging up her racket in 2014.

The former world No. 2 became the first Asian tennis player to win a singles Grand Slam title after claiming her maiden trophy at the French Open in 2011. She has just been featured in a powerful Mastercard commercial, directed by acclaimed Chinese film director Peter Chan.

In the seven-minute-long ad, the 36-year-old—who retired from the sport due to a recurring knee injury—is the director of a tennis school. She reflects on her tennis career, supported by flashbacks of her time on tour, and present-day conversations with her father, Li Shengpeng, about the challenges of living life without professional tennis.

“I finally became the professional player I dreamed of being,” she tells her father in the ad. “I used to think tennis was hard, but now I feel life is even harder.”

“You chose your own path, you are always being who you are,” her father, who died in 1996, responds. “When you were on court, people understood your hard times and efforts. Now, few people can see it. But it doesn’t matter, you are living for yourself.”

Chan is also directing Li’s upcoming movie, which is set to begin filming later this year.
