Mattek-Sands and Safarova celebrate second French Open

Watching Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lucie Safarova jump up and down in glee on the Parisian clay on Sunday was not a new sight. Could you really blame them? The top seeds at Roland Garros won their third Grand Slam in a row—defending their French Open title—by beating unseeded Casey Dellacqua and Ashleigh Barty in 66 minutes, 6-2, 6-1.

“They were absolutely flawless,” former world No. 1 Tracy Austin said on Tennis Channel.

That statement could really describe the tandem’s last three majors as a whole, as they have dropped just five sets in the three tournaments. Who wouldn’t be happy with such a performance?

Mattek-Sands and Safarova have perhaps their biggest challenge yet at Wimbledon, where neither player has advanced past the semifinals in women’s doubles in a combined 21 appearances. Ironically enough, they played each other in singles last year—Safarova won in three sets—before getting upset as the seventh seeds in the first round.

The American-Czech combo denied Dellacqua and Barty their first major title together. Dellacqua was playing in her seventh doubles Grand Slam final, while Barty was competing in her fourth. They reached three doubles major finals together in 2013.
