With a crowd of British fans cheering on hometown hope Emma Raducanu, Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic could at least count on the support of boyfriend Matteo Berrettini, who could, well, hardly contain himself as she advanced into her first Grand Slam quarterfinal at Wimbledon.

Berrtettini and Tomljanovic each made it into the last eight at the All England Club after winning their respective round of 16 matches. Undefeated on grass this season, the No. 7-seeded Italian scored a ninth straight victory when he defeated Ilya Ivashka in straight sets. Many hours—and one rain delay— later, Tomljanovic emerged on Court 1 aiming to back up her tense win over Jelena Ostapenko on Saturday.

Up a set and 3-0 on the 18-year-old British sensation, Raducanu left the court for a medical timeout and was ultimately forced to retire due to difficulty breathing. It had been a close match to that point, something that was clear from Berrettini’s enthusiastic level of investment.

Ironically enough, the pair discussed their superstitions when it comes to watching one another play just two days ago on the official Wimbledon YouTube channel:

The My Tennis Life star will next take on countrywoman and world No. 1 Ashleigh Barty on Tuesday in the first all-Aussie Wimbledon quarterfinal since 1980, while Berrettini will face Felix Auger-Aliassime in the hopes of reaching his second career Grand Slam semifinal.
