Puerto Rico’s Monica Puig may have officially retired from professional tennis this summer, but the 29-year-old’s constant desire to find new ways to challenge herself hasn’t changed one bit.

And this weekend, Puig is set to be tested to her limits as she takes on one of her biggest challenges yet: the prestigious New York City Marathon, which will be held this weekend on Sunday, 6 November.

"I had always wanted to run a marathon, but I never knew how," Puig said in an interview. “And I've taken it very seriously for three and a half months, training and racking up the miles. And now it's just around the corner."

After a long battling arm, elbow and shoulder injuries for three years—an ongoing struggle that required her to undergo four surgeries—Puig announced her retirement from tennis with an emotional Instagram post in June. The Puerto Rican has since been spending her time delving deeper into her various passions, including tennis commentary for ESPN in Spanish.

Puig has also discovered her passion for running, and has been documenting her journey on social media while she trained for more than three months for the upcoming marathon.

“I gotta admit… I didn’t think running was ever for me, but this journey has been humbling and liberating,” she wrote on Instagram in September.

“Running has given me a sense of purpose and plenty of goals to work towards. It’s the hobby I never knew I needed.”

The 2016 Olympic gold medalist also said her new goal is to run all of the six world’s major marathons: New York City, Chicago, Boston, London, Berlin and Tokyo.

“Running is like tennis because, in the end, your biggest enemy is your own mind,” Puig added. “And that's where you can fail or succeed."

"I have been able to learn new things on this new path and I still use those tools that I learned as a professional tennis player.”
