Is Andy Murray really back? The world No. 1 played one of his best matches since 2016, but it was rarely easy until he pulled away in the third set for the 7-6 (8), 7-5, 6-0 victory over Juan Martin del Potro.

It was a highly anticipated match with Del Potro and Murray splitting epic battles in the Olympic final and Davis Cup semifinals last year. This time time around, Murray was looking to snap out of his 2017 malaise. Del Potro, playing in his first French Open since 2012, was hoping to keep improving his form after injuries early in the air.

Del Potro has his chances in the first set, serving at 5-4 and eventually squandering four set points. The Scot talked about how heavy and tough the conditions were in his post-match interview.

Both players also took time to admire each other.

Del Potro believes Murray’s shot variety and intelligence are the keys for him to contend for the title.

But while the popular Del Potro will be best remembered for helping injured opponent Nicolas Almagro in his previous match, the good news is that he’s bolstering his game. He’s been increasingly able to mix in stronger double backhand shots (his crippling injuries have involved his left wrist).

Meanwhile, Murray moves on to the second week to face 21-year-old Karen Khachanov (who beat John Isner to reach his first career Gran Slam fourth round).
