On Thursday, Rafael Nadal was granted the Grand Cross of the Order of Dos de Mayo, the highest honor the Madrid region can grant. The decoration was given in tribute to his status as the best Spanish athlete of all time.

He is being recognized for “his example, commitment and vision of sport and life in general”. The Community of Madrid grants the Order of Dos de Mayo for acts or services relevant to citizens for their "contribution to political, economic, cultural or social progress".

The 34-year-old was presented the award by Isabel Dias Ayuso, president of the Community of Madrid, at the Royal Post Office.

He dedicated the award to the victims and family members affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Other athletes that have earned the honor include skier Francisco Fernandez Ochoa, motorcycling world champion Angel Nieto, tennis player Manuel Santana, cyclist Alberto Contador, skater Javier Fernandez, basketball player Felipe Reyes and soccer coach Vicente del Bosque.
