Nike began hyping fans for Naomi Osaka’s return to Grand Slam competition on Sunday by teasing the outfit she will wear at the 2024 Australian Open.

“Yesterday I found new purpose in tomorrow,” reads the caption posted on social media. “Today, I’m stronger.”

Osaka has not competed in a Grand Slam tournament since the 2022 US Open, leaving the sport two months later to begin a maternity leave that sidelined her for the entire 2023 season. She gave birth to daughter Shai, whom she has frequently cited as a primary motivation for her comeback, last summer.

The former world No. 1 resumed her tennis career at the Brisbane International two weeks ago, where she made a winning return before bowing out to fellow former No. 1 Karolina Pliskova in three high-quality sets.

Osaka will take the court on Rod Laver Arena’s second night session of the tournament, where she will close play against No. 16 seed Caroline Garcia. Their last meeting took place at this very tournament, which Osaka won en route to her fourth Grand Slam victory in 2021.

Essentially Sports drew parallels between Osaka’s outfit and the dress Nike designed for Serena Williams to wear in her final major appearance at the 2022 US Open. Osaka famously defeated Williams to win her first Grand Slam title in Flushing Meadows four years prior, and the 23-time Grand Slam champion retired from the sport following a third-round exit to Ajla Tomljanovic.

Might Osaka set a new trend in Melbourne?
