Ons Jabeur and her team go low-key for her birthday in New York City on the eve of the US Open

On August 28, the ATP's No. 28 player turned 25, while the WTA’s No. 5 player turned 28.

Reilly Opelka and Ons Jabeur both celebrated trips around the sun on one of the few days of the year when no tennis is played—the Sunday before the US Open main draw begins.

No one has to wish Jabeur a happy birthday—Tunisia’s top tennis player is known as the Minister of Happiness for her positive outlook on life. Chances are, she’s happy on any given day. But well-wishes flowed in for the popular player and 2022 Wimbledon finalist. Sorana Cirstea, Alja Tomljanovic and Aryna Sabalenka were among Jabeur's fellow players to send sentiments on social media.

Jabeur spent at least part of the day on the practice courts at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in preparation for the US Open. She plays her first-round match Monday against American Madison Brengle. Jabeur won their only meeting, two years ago on hard court.

After practice, Jabeur was pictured online dressed casually and holding a chocolate lunchbox cake on a New York City rooftop with members of her team. A lunchbox layer cake, which is a Korean creation that has recently landed Stateside, is bigger than a cupcake but small enough to fit in a sandwich-size take-out box. Jabeur might not squeeze in a proper birthday dinner and champagne tonight, but at least she got dolled up and hit the town Saturday evening with a squad of WTA stars attending a glamorous cocktail party hosted by Bethanie Mattek-Sands. Part of the pre-US Open party circuit, Ladies Night in the City took place in the sleek Midtown Centrale residential tower and revolved around the launch of a diamond jewelry collection.

Jabeur has never played a US Open match on her birthday. She was scheduled to in 2019, but rain delayed the match until the next day, when she won.

Opelka, on the other hand, had the misfortune of losing on that same rainy day. His match versus Dominik Koepfer took place on Louis Armstrong Stadium, which has a roof.

Ranked No. 28 in the world, Opelka has withdrawn from this year’s US Open. Perhaps that means more time to shop around Soho for new fine art as a gift to himself. The 2022 Dallas Open champion is a known art collector who visits galleries around the world while he travels to tournaments. Fellow American players Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul gave Opelka birthday shout-outs on social media, along with the Laver Cup. Opelka suited up for Team World in the 2021 competition.
