Venus Williams gets vulnerable after US Open loss | TC Live

NEW YORK — Venus Williams returned to the US Open for the first time in two years and made her comeback in unmistakable style.

The seven-time Grand Slam champion has worn a different outfit for every appearance so far at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center — from an instantly viral fuzzy racquet bag paired with a retro Althea Gibson-inspired look, to a $45 H&M tennis dress.

According to CNN Style, the 45-year-old has been working with stylist Ronald Burton, who has also dressed Solange Knowles and Erykah Badu, to curate her US Open wardrobe.

“I’ve just been having fun on the court. It’s fun to express yourself,” Venus said after a women’s doubles win with Leylah Fernandez on Thursday. “Today my jacket was Phillip Lim, and the other day it was ERL, so just designers that I like. It’s been cute.”

Venus made her US Open return in mixed doubles with Reilly Opelka last week, wearing a custom look by New York fashion house Khaite. The classic navy tennis dress featured cap sleeves, an open back with a peekaboo bra, and white trim along the hems, paired with crisp white Lacoste sneakers.

The outfit was designed by Khaite’s creative director Cate Holstein, formerly of Vera Wang, marking the brand’s first foray into tennis.

For her long-awaited return to Arthur Ashe Stadium, facing No. 11 seed Karolina Muchova, Venus paid homage to Althea Gibson with an all-white pleated skirt, polo shirt, and jacket by ERL, the label founded by Eli Russell Linnetz.

The tribute came during the US Open’s celebration of 75 years since Gibson broke tennis’s color barrier.

“Everything this year is inspired by Althea, right? It’s a big year, and she’s an American champion,” Venus said.

“I’m so happy that we’re paying homage to her, that people are getting to know her and her accomplishments, what that means for us, and how inspiring it is for every single person.”

While the tennis world was loving the tribute to Gibson, the fashion world was buzzing about her accessory.

Her blonde fuzzy racquet bag, also by ERL, added a surreal twist to the retro-inspired look and landed Venus in quite a few fashion best-dressed lists.
