Stan Smith is a household name, known to those in both the tennis and fashion worlds.

His signature Adidas shoe’s minimalist all-white design has become easily recognizable to all, accented with its ever-so-subtle splash of color.

But who is the man behind the shoe?

Produced by LeBron James with Maverick Carter’s Spring Hill Company and directed by Danny Lee, “Who is Stan Smith?'' premiered at the IFC Center in New York City on Wednesday, giving audiences a closer look into the life of the No. 1-ranked tennis superstar.

Interviews with Smith, along with his family and friends, follow his journey from youth to college, all the way to the biggest stages like the US Open and Wimbledon, culminating with his induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

Not only does the documentary highlight Smith’s athletic accomplishments, it also covers his humanitarian feats off the tennis court: Smith’s relationship with Arthur Ashe heavily inspired his anti-racist activism, and the film touches upon his relationship with Black player, Mark Mathabane, whom Smith helped escape from apartheid in South Africa.

Viewers learn that Smith was also passionate about labor relations: he boycotted Wimbledon in 1973 to support Nikola Pilić, who had been suspended by Wimbledon’s organizing body.

50 years later, the simplest of sneakers continues to carry the weight and legacy of one of the greatest to ever touch the game.

Tickets are on sale for online screenings of documentary from November 10th to November 27th.
