Some stars passed on playing in the French Open, while others weren't allowed in. You know all their names. What matters is what took place inside and outside the lines in Paris. On the heels of a fairly predictable and alternately off-the-chain major event, here are the thoroughly vetted, unequivocal–or entirely subjective–best and worst moments from the 2017 French Open.

For all the sportsmanship on display at Roland Garros this year, a fair share of acrimony showed up as well.

Case in point: 20-year-old Canadian Francoise Abanda indubitably scorned quarterfinalist Caroline Wozniacki and her game after being shellacked double-bagel style:

How precious. You can call that a statement that reveals far more about the one saying it than the one it was intended to malign.

And dare to compare it to Wozniacki’s own words about recent birthday girl CiCi Bellis, 18 years young, who made the third round in Paris and took Wozniacki nearly to the limit, losing a 6-3 third set.

Granted, it’s certainly simpler to be gracious in defeat. And speaking of that …

"It was the coldest kiss I had in my life, but it was a kiss," Alize Cornet said after losing to Caroline Garcia in a hotly contested though generally lopsided, straight-sets quarterfinal between home-country competitors. "I was not expecting that she wanted to give me a kiss, and I liked it. I mean, it was good to finish on this note–I wouldn't have liked just a handshake, like very cold. I'm not this kind of person. I'm a very nice person. I don't like the conflict, so I told her good luck, and I mean it."

Garcia, a defector from France’s Fed Cup team, has faced down a series of “LOL” responses on Twitter from the likes of her countrywomen, including Cornet and Kristina Mladenovic. What she did in stopping her erstwhile friend’s run at Roland Garros was let her racquet parle enfrancais.

Despite these isolated flurries of chilly behavior and wordage, this remains: The likes of Svetlana Kuznetsova are too accomplished and too veteran for such pettiness. As for Kuznetsova, she just wishes she had fewer options.

Let’s see if the pomp of playing on grass at Wimbledon catalyzes more post-match civility among all of the competitors.
