Roger Federer documents Malawi trip on behalf of eponymous foundation

Last week, Roger Federer shared news of his trip to Malawi for his eponymous foundation, during which he presented 3,000 tablets to help the country’s teachers and caregivers.

On Wednesday, the 20-time Grand Slam champion gave fans a closer look at the Roger Federer Foundation’s impact on the children of Malawi in a video posted to the foundation’s YouTube channel.

“A visit from Roger Federer to Malawi can open doors and create new dynamics,” explained Dr. Janine Händel, CEO of the Roger Federer Foundation. “This is why we met ministers, parliamentarians and international donors, all with the goal to have more funding for early learning in this country.”

In addition to diplomatic exchanges and charitable donations, Federer is seen visiting various schools across rural areas of the country, playing with the children and taking in their progress.

“What I want to do is help, and give the people and the kids here a chance in Malawi because I do believe their potential is incredibly big. This is why I’m here, to see it for myself so I can then tell the story when I come back to Switzerland.”

The Roger Federer Foundation was launched early in the former world No. 1’s career and, according to its official website, focuses “on conducting programmes in six countries in southern Africa as well as Switzerland.”

“There are many good reasons to invest in early childhood development, but when Roger became a father, he truly became an expert himself in early learning,” said Händel. “So, he was very convinced that this was the most powerful investment he could do with his foundation.”

“It’s amazing to see in rural Malawi that we have digital devices, like the early learning kiosk, making the difference for the children here," adds Federer. "The caregivers are doing an incredible job. I love seeing that.”
