With Novak Djokovic back on court and Rafael Nadal hoping to return in just a few weeks, many have been wondering about the status of the other member of the Big 3.

This is Federer’s second extended lay-off in the last few years, the first one lasting over a year between the Australian Open in January 2020 and Doha in March 2021, during which he had his first two surgeries on his right knee.

Despite the time away, the former No. 1 won 9 of 13 matches during his brief return to the tour last year, even reaching the second week of both majors he played—he made the fourth round at Roland Garros and the quarterfinals at Wimbledon.
