Serena Vogue Legendary

Serena Williams, Jane Fonda and Miley Cyrus were among the 40 megastars that graced the cover of British Vogue’s latest “legendary” issue, which was unveiled on social media on Thursday.

To mark the end of editor-in-chief Edward Enninful's six-and-a-half-year tenure at the helm of the acclaimed fashion magazine, a massive lineup of former British *Vogue* cover stars gathered for an epic photoshoot—with the 23-time Grand Slam champion and entrepreneur sitting right at the center.

“It was clear to all of us on the team that no one woman could or should encapsulate these past few years for the magazine,” Enninful wrote. “What we needed was a group, to lean into the power of the collective to bring to life what I hope has been a daring, disruptive and evolutionary period in Vogue’s history.

“They also—by dint of extraordinary impact, force of personality, style and influence—needed to have reached beyond fashion and culture to change the fabric of society in the 2020s, in ways small and large and always positive.”

The fashion shoot by Steven Meisel was photographed by Ned Rogers and styled by Enninful, and featured Serena in a black silk Versace gown with asymmetrical sleeves.

Joining Serena on the cover was a who’s who list of fashion names, including the original supermodels Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington and Linda Evangelista, while even more transcendent stars included Oprah Winfrey, Victoria Beckham, Anya Taylor-Joy, Dua Lipa and more.

And to be clear, those 40 global megastars weren’t snapped individually and then photoshopped onto the magazine cover. They were in fact photographed in person, all together, in what Enninful revealed to be a massive undertaking involving “the biggest set” of his career.

“I held my breath for weeks,” he wrote. “Would 40 of the most booked and blessed women on earth actually make it to one studio in New York, on one day in December, to take one image together?”

Turns out they did, against all odds—and the result is one epic farewell magazine worthy of its “Legendary!” cover tagline.

The March 2024 issue of British Vogue will hit the newsstands on Tuesday, February 13.
