Asked about 24 Slams, Serena Williams says “I’ve already broken the record” on TODAY show

Serena Williams is evolving away from tennis with no regrets, she reveals in a TODAY show interview alongside elder sister Venus.

Williams made a triumphant return to Arthur Ashe Stadium on Monday night with a win over Danka Kovinic, and isn’t thinking too hard about what few records she may have left on the table.

“I’ve already broken the record,” she says of Margaret Court’s 24 major victories, a tally earned before the Open Era began in 1968. “I never dreamt of having this many Grand Slams or titles. I just thought I would play tennis and maybe win a Grand Slam or two. For me, it’s all a bonus.”

Serena won her 23rd major title at the 2017 Australian Open while pregnant with daughter Olympia, surpassing Stefanie Graf’s 22 majors after having tied the record at the 2016 Wimbledon Championships.

The former world No. 1 announced her decision to “evolve away” rather than “retire from” the sport she’s played for 27 years in an op-ed published in Vogue Magazine. Speaking before the US Open began, Williams correctly predicted an emotional affair for what will likely be her final major tournament.

“This whole journey is going to be emotional. I love what I do, and there’s nothing about me not loving my job. I’ve been playing it my whole entire life, so it’s very emotional to evolve into something new.”

Williams will be back on Arthur Ashe Stadium Wednesday night for a highly-anticipated second-round encounter with No. 2 seed Anett Kontaveit.
