NEW YORK— A solid gold shoelace tag, 400 hand-set diamonds and a diamond-laden “Swoosh” logo—and that’s just on Serena Williams’ shoes.

As the 23-time Grand Slam winner prepares to say farewell to the sport, Nike pulled out all the stops in a head-turning all-black look packed with style, symbolism and plenty of sparkles.

Designed in collaboration with Serena and working in conjunction with her Serena Williams Jewelry company, Nike created a glittering long-sleeved dress for the former world No. 1 that takes its inspiration from the world of figure skating and features a skirt with six layers—one for each of her US Open titles.

“I had six layers to represent the six wins, but I took four out because it was too heavy,” she told Gayle King after the match.

“Historically, Serena’s love for, and training in, fashion has informed breathtaking, defining looks,” Nike described in a statement.

“For her latest outfit for Flushing, Serena took control, providing the full vision and dialing the details for a thrilling design created to make her feel comfortable and confident.”

To complete the outfit, Serena stepped out onto Arthur Ashe Stadium on Monday in custom NikeCourt Flare 2 shoes, a removable cape and a matching jacket with star-shaped embellishments—a nod to the New York City night sky that she will be playing under.

Serena, who has lifted the US Open singles trophy in 1999, 2002, 2008, 2012, 2013 and 2014, defeated Danka Kovinic of Montenegro 6-3, 6-3 in the first match of what is expected to be Serena's final professional tennis tournament as she begins her “evolution” away from the sport.
