Sock slides into Top 10 and ATP Finals with Paris win

When the week in Paris began, the talk was whether Juan Martin del Potro or Pablo Carreno Busta would qualify for London. Instead, Jack Sock completed an improbable run to win his first ATP Masters 1000 and punch his ticket for the ATP Finals in London.

After saving two match points in his first round, Sock would reach the final and battle past surprise finalist Filip Krajinovic, 5-7, 6-4, 6-1.

Sock became the first American to win an ATP Masters 1000 title since Andy Roddick at the 2010 Miami Open. The 25-year-old finishes as the top American for the first time in his career and moves up to No. 9 in the ATP rankings—his first time inside the Top 10.

The week had to go perfectly for Sock, which meant unexpected losses for Del Potro, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Kevin Anderson, Sam Querrey and Lucas Pouille, as well as a withdrawal from top seed Rafael Nadal. Sock even survived a third-set 5-1 deficit in the first round against Kyle Edmund.

After winning match point, Sock collapsed onto the court, sought out his team in the stands and gave an emotional speech to the Parisian crowd.

He was joined in Paris by girlfriend and good luck charm Michala Burns for their first overseas trip together.

After holding aloft the unique tree-shaped powder green trophy, Sock received congratulatory messages from legends like Boris Becker and Rod Laver.

The American will now be packing his bags for London after canceling his original vacation plans.

“I had a golf trip with Isner next week in Augusta, which would have been pretty special,” Sock said. “But I'll look forward to seeing him at his wedding in a couple months."

It’s certainly a career highlight for Sock, at least in singles, and bolsters one of the most diverse championship-winning resumes in the sport.
