Springfield Lasers defend WTT title over NY Empire

World TeamTennis wrapped up its 44th season on Saturday at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas in front of a full crowd which included co-founder Billie Jean King.

It marked the first time the WTT playoffs were hosted in Las Vegas. Coached by John-Laffnie De Jager, the clinching Springfield team included Abigail Spears, Olga Govortsova, Evan Song, Robert Lindstedt, Anna Blinkova and by way of FaceTime after the match, Jean-Julien Rojer

The Springfield Lasers managed to fight through a close 20-19 victory over New York Empire to capture the King Trophy for the second consecutive year. It all came down to the final men's doubles matchup between the Lasers' Song and Lindstedt and Empire's Ulises Blanch and Neal Skupski.

Springfield's Govortsova attempted to take out Kirsten Flipkens, but ultimately fell 5-3, leaving the Laser's trailing 17-15 ahead of the final event.

With the pressure on, Song and Lindstedt let three championship points slip before winning the set 5-3 and completing their title defense.

Las Vegas native Song replaced Enrique Lopez Perez to join the Lasers for playoff action.

“Being from Vegas and winning in an event like this, it’s just a dream for me,” the world No. 447 said. “It was an incredible atmosphere. I think I turned some of them into Springfield fans."

The Lasers finish on top of a strong WTT season that saw eight teams, including two new ones in Las Vegas and Orlando.
