Madison Keys made a strong start to her 2021 Wimbledon campaign on Monday, firing eight aces and never facing a single break point en route to a 6-3, 6-4 win over British qualifier Katie Swan.

With the win, Keys improved to 30-4 in her career in first-round matches at majors. Even more impressively, she’s now won 25 of her last 26 first-round matches at majors, the only loss in the last seven years coming in the first round of Roland Garros last year to China’s Zhang Shuai.

“It was great to be back in Wimbledon,” she said afterwards. “Obviously not playing last year was very, very disappointing, and it feels a little bit weird that there was such a big gap in between grass seasons. But to have a crowd and the size of the crowd that we had today, I at one point felt like it was back to normal, and it was just very, very nice to be back in a situation where you felt an amazing crowd, even if they were cheering obviously for my opponent and wanted her to win.

“It was just so nice to have energy and people who are excited to watch tennis.”

Keys’ best career result at Wimbledon was reaching the quarterfinals in 2015, where she fell to Agnieszka Radwanska, 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-3. This is the only major she hasn’t been to the semifinals of.

Awaiting Keys in the second round will be fellow American Lauren Davis.
