With a hard-fought 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 victory over American wild card Jenson Brooksby in the fourth round of the US Open on Monday night, Novak Djokovic improved to 25-0 at Grand Slams this year, just three wins away from becoming the first man in 52 years to complete a Calendar-Year Grand Slam.
The last man to achieve the feat was Rod Laver in 1969.
Asked about his two-hour, 59-minute victory over Brooksby, Djokovic only had good things to say about the 20-year-old.
“I think we’re going to see a lot of him in the future,” he said. “He has the means. Now, obviously a lot of things have to come together, but he has a bit of an unorthodox game, does a lot with the feel. But he’s smart. He knows how to win points.”
This is the fourth-longest Grand Slam winning streak of Djokovic’s career. He won 26 in a row between 2018 Wimbledon and 2019 Roland Garros, 27 in a row between 2011 Wimbledon and 2012 Roland Garros, and 30 in a row between 2015 Wimbledon and 2016 Wimbledon.
His 30-match winning streak between Wimbledon in 2015 and 2016 is actually the longest Grand Slam winning streak for a man in the Open Era.
