Aryna Sabalenka made a winning start to her week in Montreal on Wednesday, rallying from 4-1 down in the third to beat Sloane Stephens, 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-4.

The top seed at the WTA 1000 event, she’s now on top in another way—her comeback win over the American was her tour-leading 36th match win of the year.

2021 WTA MATCH WIN LEADERS
36: Aryna Sabalenka
35: Ashleigh Barty (not playing Montreal)
35: Barbora Krejcikova (not playing Montreal)
34: Ons Jabeur (going for 35th win of the year tonight against Daria Kasatkina)

Sabalenka is riding high on confidence right now, having recently reached her first Grand Slam semifinal at Wimbledon last month—prior to that run, she had never even been to a quarterfinal at any of the majors. And she very nearly made the final at the All England Club, too, barely falling to Karolina Pliskova in the semis, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.

The No. 3-ranked Belarusian has a chance at taking the No. 2 ranking from Naomi Osaka this week, too, though it depends on how the rest of the tournament unfolds.

Awaiting her in the third round will be Canadian wild card Rebecca Marino.
