Flip a few points in her semifinal against Ashleigh Barty and it could have well been Anisimova going on to win the 2019 French Open. The 19-year-old American was fresh off a stunning win over defending champion Simona Halep and led the future world No. 1 by a set and a break before unraveling.

Disappointment turned to tragedy when Anisimova lost her father months later, and the pandemic not only derailed her 2020 comeback but also wrecked the start of her 2021 season, when a COVID-19 diagnosis kept her off a plane to Australia.

“Then again, when I went to the Doha tournament also, I fell and rolled my ankle,” the no-nonsense teenager drily recalled in Miami. “So, it was definitely a couple tournaments in a row there were tough situations.”

She went on to play a thrilling three-setter with Bianca Andreescu, proving that, with the right preparation and a steady mindset, her high-octane game still has plenty of promise.
