It was a big week for Lorenzo Sonego. He became the first Italian in 15 years to lift an ATP clay-court trophy in his home country, defeating Laslo Djere after losing the first set in the final of the Sardegna Open.

It was a tough fight for the third seed, needing to make a comeback. The Italian eventually prevailed after a little over three hours, 2-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4.

“The match was long and I remained calm in the second-set tiebreaker,” Sonego said after the match. “I knew the match wasn’t finished because I had always kept fighting.

“Now, I am really tired, but I am very happy. I am happy to follow in (Filippo) Volandri’s footsteps and win a title on home soil.”

The Sardegna Open was Sonego's second title in her career. Not only did the Italian win the singles title, but he also won the doubles title the day before, partnering with Andrea Vavassori. Winning the title has helped Sonego reach a career-high ranking of world No. 28.
