The Stat Sheet: Harrison standing out in doubles

Coinciding with his resurgent singles campaign that started in 2017, Ryan Harrison has also made his mark on the doubles court, most notably by joining the ranks of Grand Slam champions with his French Open title that year.

Now nearly two years later, Harrison has reached another significant milestone among his compatriots: He becomes the fourth American male to reach two or more Grand Slam semifinals in men’s doubles since 2017 after he and Sam Querrey beat Lukasz Kubot and Horacio Zeballos in the Australian Open quarterfinals.

The other three are players any observer of the game would expect to see on the list: Bob Bryan, Mike Bryan and Jack Sock. The Bryan brothers, who have reunited this year upon Bob’s return from a hip injury, almost joined Harrison in the final four in Melbourne this year before Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut halted their charge in the quarterfinals.

Mike Bryan added two more Slams to his tally as he and Sock teamed up to win Wimbledon and the US Open last year. With the Bryans back together, Sock partnered with Jackson Withrow at the Australian Open this year and right off the bat, they punched a giant hole in the draw by eliminating the second-seeded team of Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah.

Their time at the tournament came to an end at the hands of Harrison and Querrey in a third-round battle. Harrison and Querrey next face Herbert and Mahut in the semifinals as Harrison tries to join Sock and the Bryans in another elite grouping: American Grand Slam doubles finalists since ’17.
