Following the withdrawals of the Big 3 trio Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, the Miami Open lost another big name when Serena Williams became the latest star to skip the event.

The eight-time champion pulled out after undergoing a recent oral surgery.

“Miami is a special tournament for me because it’s my home,” Serena said in a statement. “I am sad I won’t be able to see the incredible fans this year, but I look forward to coming back soon.”

Despite having the surgery, Serena says she’s still enduring much discomfort.

“All right, so it’s back to the tooth chronicles. Things have gone pretty much from bad to worse and it is just not getting better," she says in an YouTube video. "I know, now, I’m gonna go on the way to the doctor who will try to figure this out because it hurts. It’s very painful and I’m swollen."

Serena played the Miami Open's inaugural Hard Rock Stadium appearance in 2019, reaching the third round before pulling out citing a knee injury.
