The first WTA main draw of the year kicked off on Wednesday in Abu Dhabi and the action did not disappoint. Many top players are in the field, including Sofia Kenin, Elina Svitolina and Garbine Muguruza.

The No. 15 seed had a tricky first-round opponent in Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. The Russian  flat-ball striker was highly aggressive, which is certainly no surprise. Jabeur managed to use her variety and consistency to post a solid 7-6 (3), 6-3 win.

Maria Sakkari

The world No. 9 could not be stopped in her Abu Dhabi opener. Sakkari's all-court game proved to be too much for Anastasia Potapova as she grabbed a 6-4, 6-2 win to start her season. The Greek successfully held serve each time and struck 18 winners.

Paula Badosa

The 23-year-old from Spain was made to work for each point against Anastasija Sevastova. Badosa started strong, but struggled in the second, giving the Latvian room to push things to a deciding set. In the end, the world No. 70-ranked Badosa came out on top with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 victory.

Sofia Kenin

The American spent the off-season improving her fitness and match toughness by getting in tons of practice sets in. The French Open finalist will look to build momentum in Abu Dhabi when she faces Yang Zhaoxuan in her opening round.

Alize Cornet

The world No.  53 will kick off her 2021 season against No. 7 seed Elise Mertens. This will mark their third meeting and the two have an even 1-1 head-to-head record. In their last meeting, Cornet defeated the German decisively during the first week of the 2019 Fed Cup.
