In three hours and 55 minutes, Shapovalov would hold off Jannik Sinner by posting a gritty3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 score to keep his campaign alive in Melbourne. On his second match point, the Canadian pulled the trigger, firing a forehand to land his 62nd winner of the match, securing the win well past midnight.

"Win or lose,” Shapovalov said, “this is one of the matches I’m going to remember for the rest of my life.”

Halep hit the cruise control button in her opening round against Linette Cabrera. In just 59 minutes, the Romanian locked in a 6-2, 6-1 win to advance into the second round. The No. 2 seed will next face Aussie Ajla Tomljanovic.

The young Canadian lost on Saturday to Dan Evans in the Murray River Open final yet managed to bounce back quickly. Although it was the world No. 19's seventh career final round loss, he put it behind him by capturing a seamless 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 win over German Cedrik-Marcel Stebe in his Australian Open first round.

The world No. 19 gets to take on Aussie James Duckworth next.

It was a solid day at the office for the two-time major champion. Kvitova eliminated Greet Minnen, 6-3, 6-4, and will face Sorana Cirstea next. The Romanian defeated Patricia Maria Tig 6-2, 6-1 in her first round Down Under.

No drama, just business. The Aussie wrapped up a 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 win over Federico Ferreira Silva to move into the second round. Although he started off a bit shaky by not not converting six break points in the opening game, he regained focused and didn't lose it for the rest of his opening bout.
