Falling in the opening round of her last two tournaments, Elina Svitolina got off to a much better start in Monterrey. The world No. 7 dismissed Danka Kovinic, 6-3, 6-2, to set up a clash with Olga Govortsova.

Svitolina's doubles partner Johanna Konta had a tough opening round against Kim Clijsters, who is just weeks into her comeback tour. Konta posted a, 6-3, 7-5, score to keep her campaign moving in Monterrey.

Daria Kasatkina was able to fight off Pauline Parmentier in Lyon. The 22-year-old Russian clawed her way to a 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 victory and will face Irina Bara for a spot in the quarterfinals.
