Is Casper Ruud ready to become a fashion icon on par with Roger Federer?

Probably not, but it’s way more fun to say, “Maybe!”

Still, there’s an argument to be made that the 23-year-old is emulating the 20-time Grand Slam champion’s preppy style, and is already earning high fashion marks both on and off the court.

The Look

Standing out amid the cool blue of the Nitto ATP Finals, Ruud surged into his fourth big final of the season decked out in a gradient Yonex ensemble of navy and bright red.

The Japanese brand, more known for its racquets, has taken some large sartorial swings in the past—Stan Wawrinka’s plaid shorts from 2015 Roland Garros, anyone?—but has seemingly adapted to the style of its bright young star after putting him in bright pink only a year ago.

Ruud is maintaining that clean style off the court, as well, donning a crisp white shirt under an eye-popping shawl cardigan by Tom Ford.

The Lore

Ruud and Federer converged at Laver Cup, where the two converged in matching suits and bowties for what would be the Swiss Maestro’s final tournament appearance of his career.

“The Big 4 know each other better than I know them, so they have their gold old histories and jokes around them,” Ruud admitted after winning his singles match against Jack Sock.

“I’m hanging a bit behind on some of the internal jokes, but that’s ok. They’re funny, and very, very gentle and nice with me. It’s just an honor to be a part of the team.”

As Federer makes his graceful exit from the game, the passing of the style torch was complete after Ruud made a second Grand Slam final of 2022 and got to meet Vogue editor Anna Wintour in New York City.

Federer has long been Wintour’s sporting muse, and likely influenced the eight-time Wimbledon’s stridently country club aesthetic.
