Venus Williams and Rajeev Ram could just as easily have not medaled at all in mixed doubles, nearly falling in their Rio opener. Down match point to the Dutch pair of Kiki Bertens and Jean-Julien Rojer, Ram stuck a reflex volley where their foes weren't to avoid an ouster. They won the marathon battle, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (3), 10-8 and the rest is history.

The duo's run continued to the final where they fell to Americans Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Jack Sock 10-7 in the third-set deciding tiebreaker. Radek Stepanek and Lucie Hradecka topped Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna for bronze.
