Venus Williams talks about the Australian Open final

It's been nearly a year since Venus Williams made her way to the Australian Open final for a showdown with her youngster sister Serena.

The 37-year-old Venus talked with Lindsay Davenport about that incredible fortnight, after reaching another major final at Wimbledon and the championship match at the WTA Finals. Melbourne was her first hard-court Grand Slam final in 15 years.

"It's definitely a great feeling, it's a year ago," Venus said. "I guess I have to be honest, I've moved on. I'm already thinking about the next Australian Open and trying to win it."

Venus also recently revealed what the biggest lesson her little sister ever taught her. It happened ahead of the 1999 US Open semifinals, which both sisters were playing in.

"I asked her, ‘So, Serena, are you nervous about tomorrow? And she’s like, ‘No, I’m not nervous because we have to show up. And since we have to show up, who not compete?'" Venus said. "And that was the best advice I ever got in my life. Sadly I didn’t listen to it at the time. That was one of my biggest failures, and it was my biggest lesson."

A then 19-year-old Venus would lose to Martina Hingis, who Serena then beat in the final for her first Grand Slam title.

In the final of the 2017 Australian Open, Serena would beat Venus in straight sets for her 23rd Grand Slam crown. Both Williams sisters are entered in the 2018 draw.
