It is often said that rather than build character, playing a sport will reveal it, and Break Point cameras got a first-hand glimpse at that adage in action between Carlos Alcaraz and Frances Tiafoe after the 2022 US Open.

In the ninth episode of the docuseries, Alcaraz and Tiafoe were fresh from battling through five physical sets with a spot in the final on the line, and though the Spaniard ultimately emerged victorious, Tiafoe was more than willing to celebrate the youngster’s phenomenal achievement in the locker room.

“Go win this thing,” Tiafoe is heard telling Alcaraz after the two hug it out following their 6-7 (6), 6-3, 6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-3 thriller.

“You’ll be world No. 1,” adds the American, knowing that the winner of the final would ascend to the top of the ATP rankings.

With warm words of his own for his vanquished opponent, Alcaraz tells Tiafoe, “You’re amazing; don’t forget it!”

Though the two have yet to face off on court in 2023, both Alcaraz and Tiafoe have achieved much in the nearly 12 months since their epic encounter. While Alcaraz indeed went on to win the US Open and become world No. 1, Tiafoe enjoyed an overdue ascension into the Top 10 only last week when he won his third career title in Stuttgart.

Tiafoe also reached his first Masters 1000 semifinal at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, which Alcaraz went on to win back in March.

With the 2023 US Open fast approaching, might the two meet again under the lights on Arthur Ashe Stadium this summer?
